December 2016 meeting of Le Cercle Washington 2.jpg

Leader ofLe Cercle
Chair of half of the meetings of Le Cercle. Reportedly sets the group's agenda and oversees its discussions but does not involve the group's finances.

Le Cercle was chaired initially by Antoine Pinay, hence the name 'Pinay Cercle'. The British took over the chairmanship of the group at some point (according to Brian Crozier's memoirs, in 1971). Possibly at the same time, the group was switched from exclusively European meetings to a general pattern of biannual meetings on alternating sides of the Atlantic. This arrangement had separate European and US chairs of the group.

Activities

"Mr Zahawi's office said the "informal" role of Le Cercle chairman consisted of setting the group's agenda and overseeing its discussions but did not include involvement in the group's finances."[1]

Secrectary

In 1997 The Telegraph named Geoffrey Tantum as the Cercle's UK secretary.[2]
