The University of Pretoria is a multi-campus public research university in Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa.
The university originated in 1908 as the Pretoria Campus of the Johannesburg-based Transvaal University College and grew from the original 32 students in a single late Victorian house to about 39,000 in 2010. The university has became independent in 1930 when the Private Act at the University of Pretoria (Act no. 13 of 1930) declared the university an independent university, with Tielman Roos as first chancellor (until 1932).
By 1982, the campus was enlarged by new and expansions, the number of students doubled during this time. With the end of apartheid, the UP opened up to all sections of the population. In 2016, it was decided to prescribe English as a language of instruction, as Afrikaans formerly was common as a language of instruction[1].
Since 1997, the University has produced more research outputs each year than any other institution of higher education in South Africa, as measured by the Department of Education's accreditation standard. In 2008, the university awarded 15.8% of all master's and doctoral degrees in South Africa, the highest percentage in South Africa.
