Miguel Luís Kolback da Veiga was a Portuguese lawyer and politician.[1] He participated in the 1994 Bilderberg meeting.
Education
Graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra in 1959, he pursued a career in law. In 1974, along with Francisco Sá Carneiro, Joaquim Magalhães Mota, Francisco Pinto Balsemão and others, he was one of the founders of the Democratic People's Party (today the Social Democratic Party), coming to occupy the positions of vice president and member of its first Political Commissions. and National Councils. He was a deputy to the Constituent Assembly.[2] Despite his party affiliation, he ended up supporting Mário Soares in the first candidacy for President (when Soares ran again in 2006, he again sought the support of Veiga, who however preferred to support the "orange" candidate Aníbal Cavaco Silva).[3] In his political life, he always maintained a secular, republican and social-democratic stance which, among others, he considered to be the true reformist identity of the PPD-PSD , with part of its genesis in the republicans of the city of Porto.
He was awarded the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Liberty (June 9, 1994)[4] and is also a member of the Council of Honorary Orders. In 2007 he was awarded the Municipal Medal of Merit – Gold Grade by the Porto City Council. At the time he delivered an extensive and emotional speech entitled Reason for the Feeling of Belonging to Porto.[5]
He was one of the main signatories of the Manifesto in Defense of the Portuguese Language Against the Orthographic Agreement of 1990, an online petition that, between May 2008 (starting date) and May 2009 (date of consideration by Parliament), collected more than 115 thousand valid signatures.[6]
He died on November 14, 2016, aged 80.
Accusations of plagiarism
Miguel Veiga was accused of plagiarism by José António Saraiva. In the book Confessions, published in 2006, the former director of Expresso José António Saraiva revealed two complaints of plagiarism that led him to suspend the lawyer's opinion articles in the weekly. He was also accused of plagiarism by Professor João Sousa Dias and convicted, after publishing a text by him, mentioning him only as a bibliographic reference, without revealing that he copied it in full.[7]
