Manager of the family chemical corporation Solvay S.A. who connected his company to the US

Jacques Solvay, a member of the Solvay family, was manager of the large Belgian chemical company Solvay S.A. in the 1970s.

Company

In the mid 1960s, Solway entered into a rapprochement with the US coproration Allied Chemical.[1] In 1965, Jacques Solway, Paul Walsher and a number of senior Solway executives visited Allied Chemical i New York. A start had been made. Solway CEO Boël, discussing the issue with Allied's CEO Chester Brown, at first aimed to get two of his American confidants on the board, one from the investment bank Lazard Frères and one from Sullivan and Cromwell. But André Meyer, CEO of Lazard, advised him that industrial experience on the board was indispensable. Chester Brown agreed, an on June 25 1966 Jacques Solway entered the board of Allied Chemical.

For Jacques Solway a period of close contact with the United States started. The board meetings of Allied took place almost every month, and on the margins of those meetings, Jacques gradually expanded his American network. He bought a summer house on the coast of Massachusetts; he met frequently with André Meyer, George Murnan Jr., Frank Pizzitola, and other partners of Lazard Frères, as well as with consultant Dick Paget and top executive of Allied, such as Jack Connor.

He was invited to the Conference Board, and later to the meetings of American Enterprise Institute, by president Gerald Ford. Several of his American contacts became his close friends.

On 14. June 1971, Jacques became Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Executive Committe in Solway S.A.

Under the leadership of Jacques Solvay, the company was acknowledged as the European leader in the manufacture of polyvinyl chlorid [2]
