German politician who suddenly died en-route to be interviewed in a talk show after voicing criticism of the governments Covid-19 measures.

Thomas Oppermann was a German Social Democratic politician and lawyer. From October 24, 2017 until his death, he was Vice President of the German Bundestag (Parliament).[1][2] A few days before his death, Oppermann sharply criticized the federal and state governments' corona policy measures. Together with Franz Klein and Mario Ohoven, he was one of three prominent and outspoken lockdown critics who died within a 30 day window towards the end of 2020.[3][4]

Criticism of the Government's Corona Policy

A few days before his death, Oppermann sharply criticized the federal and state governments' corona policy measures, and expected new court decisions to overturn the government's harsh rules. He criticized the fact that the preparation for a second "Corona wave" in Autumn 2020 was discussed "behind closed doors in the Chancellery" instead of involving the Parliament. As a result, the activism of the separate state governments led to poorly thought out individual measures, "which either violate the principle of proportionality or the principle of equal treatment."[5][6]

Official Death Story

Oppermann died on October 25, 2020 after collapsing directly before he was to go on a live video interview for a ZDF political debate TV-show ("Berlin direkt"),[7] with the subject "Bundestag and Corona". Oppermann suddenly collapsed while the first part of the program was being aired. He was transported to hospital, but died.

"In the preliminary talk about the planned segment, we saw the always professional and relaxed politician Thomas Oppermann", the TV-host stated in his condolences.[8]

Assassination?

In August 2024 Wolfgang Wodarg suggested that Oppermann may have been poisoned in the minutes before his TV appearance.[9]
