He was Vice President of the Fabian Society, and was its treasurer from 1982 to 2012. He was Chairman of the Centre for European Reform, which he co-founded with David Miliband from 1994 to 2009, a member of the President's International Advisory Board at Yale University from 2007 to 2014, and a founder member of the British-American Project for the Successor Generation (BAP).[2]

Nick Butler was a Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Lincoln in the 1992 and 1987 General Elections. He was a Special Adviser to former Prime Minister Gordon Brown from 2009-2010.[3]
