Waldron began his career at Bear Stearns, where he was an analyst in investment banking and met David Solomon, Goldman's current CEO. He joined Goldman in 2000 and became co-head of the investment banking division in 2015 and president and COO in 2018.[1]

In July 2024, it was reported that "John Waldron may never be CEO of Goldman Sachs. After threatening to resign, Waldron has allegedly been sidelined for the top job".[1]
