Air Marshal Sir Bruce Reid Ferguson[1] is a retired Royal New Zealand Air Force officer who was Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force from 2001 until 2006 and Director of the Government Communications Security Bureau[2][3] from 2006 until 2011.

Early life and family

Ferguson was born in Napier on 14 July 1949, the son of Phyllis and Arthur Ferguson, and educated at Tauranga Boys' College.[4] In 1974, he married Rosemary Rondel, and the couple went on to have three children.[4]

Career

He Graduated as RNZAF pilot in 1970. He was Commanding officer at the Central Flying School 1982-1984. From 1984–86, he was staff officer to Chief of the NZ Air Staff. From 1986–88 he was Director of Air Force Personnel, and at USAF Air War College, where he graduated in 1989.[5][6]

From 1991 until 1995, he was Commander, RNZAF Base Auckland, while studying at the Royal College of Defence Studies, where he graduated in 1995.

Between 1995–97, he was Chief of Air Force Personnel. 1997–2001 he was Assistant Chief of Defence Force (Personnel).

In 2000 he Graduated from the UK Ashridge Senior Executive Management Course. In 2001 he became Senior Fellow at the Asia Pacific Strategic Studies College.

Between 2001 and 2006, he was Chief of Defence Force, when New Zealand participated in the invasion of Afghanistan.
