Theranos was an American privately held corporation that was touted as a breakthrough health technology company. Founded in 2003 by 19-year-old Elizabeth Holmes, Theranos raised more than US$700 million from venture capitalists and private investors, resulting in a $10 billion valuation at its peak in 2013 and 2014.[1] The company claimed that it had devised blood tests that required very small amounts of blood and that could be performed rapidly and accurately, all using compact automated devices which the company had developed. These claims were later proven to be false.[2][3] What remained of the company was dissolved on September 4, 2018.

William Foege“Having had the opportunity to look at their technology, it's very robust. The problems they have been vilified for have to do with lab operations and the fact that they have not published in peer reviewed journals. They are correcting the operational problems, and changes are being made. As for the science, they are preparing to send articles to peer reviewed journals. For me, the bottom line is that global health needs this sort of technology and Theranos is going to solve the problems to provide it. That's what has me excited.”William Foege25 July 2016
