According to the Official Narrative, Ayman al-Zawahiri, an eye surgeon who helped found the Egyptian Islamic Jihad militant group, took over the leadership of Al Qaeda following the killing by US forces of Osama bin Laden in May 2011.
Before that, Zawahiri was often referred to as Bin Laden's right-hand man and the chief ideologue of al-Qaeda. He is believed by some experts to have been the "operational brains" behind the September 11 attacks in the United States.
In August 2015, he pledged allegiance to the new Afghan Taliban chief, Mullah Akhtar Mansour in an audio message issued by Al Qaeda's media arm Al-Sahab.
Zawahiri was number two - behind only Bin Laden - in the 22 "most wanted terrorists" list announced by the US government in 2001 and continues to have a $25m (£16m) bounty on his head.[1]
Asset of US/NATO
In a February 2013 video, James Corbett suggested Ayman al-Zawahiri is actually an asset of US/NATO:
- "We are told a certain tale about the story of Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden’s right-hand man and the inheritor of the Al Qaeda operation, but we are not told everything. Join us this week on the Corbett Report as we go in search of the real Ayman al-Zawahiri and uncover some surprising connections."[2]
