Michel Tatu was a French journalist.
Biography
Studies
From 1950 to 1951 he was a student at Lycée Ampère in Lyon[1]. From 1951 to 1954 he was a student at the business school HEC Paris[2]. In 1965 he studied kremlinology at the Institute on Communist Affairs at Columbia University in New York. Zbigniew Brzezinski was director of the program, which indicates an intelligence connection.
Career
From 1957 to 1964, he was correspondent for the newspaper Le Monde in Moscow, then from 1966 to 1969, he was correspondent for Le Monde for Eastern Europe[3]. Until 1971 he was a diplomatic editor and then from 1971 to 1977, head of the foreign news of Le Monde. From 1977 to 1980 he was correspondent for the newspaper Le Monde in Washington[4].
He then returned to France. Supported by a few computer scientists and assistants (but with unknown funding), Tatu invented SOVT, a database on the Soviet elite. The software allowed all kinds of sorting: by age, by region of birth, by type of study, by influence networks, etc. Passionate about kremlinology, he is enthusiastic about these biographies, which he scrutinizes to the comma.[5]
From 1980 to 1994 he was an editorial writer for Le Monde, and then, from its opening, leader of the online version Monde.fr.
