Background
William C. Lewis revealed details of Operation Timber Sycamore in his book "Canceling Timber Sycamore: Trump Ends Obama’s Shadow Mercenary Arming Program in Syria: U.S. Bombs Its Own Deep State Arms Factories For War Profiteers", published in November 2019.
The Barack Obama-Hillary Clinton CIA directed Operation Timber Sycamore to arm Sunni Salafist Wahhabite Islamist mercenary rebels including Free Syrian Army, Syrian branch of Al Qaeda-Al Nusra Front and ISIS that featured an alliance with Gulf Arab allies such as Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates in addition to Turkey and Jordan.
Saudi intelligence and the CIA's Special Activities Division collaborated in arming these rebels, and up to 100,000 Syrian Army (SAA) soldiers of the Russian backed Syrian Bashar al-Assad government were either wounded or killed in a four-year period, causing Russia to intervene in the Syrian war in the autumn of 2015 to bomb the NATO-backed Al Qaeda mercenaries.
How much money Operation Timber Sycamore ended up costing is still not known.[2]
Favoured by Biden
Vice-President Joe Biden is known to have been an active proponent of Operation Timber Sycamore within the Obama administration, and the President secretly authorised the CIA to begin arming Syria’s rebels in 2012.[3]
Cancelled by Trump
In July 2017, US officials stated that Operation Timber Sycamore would be phased out, with funds possibly redirected to fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), or to offering rebel forces defensive capabilities.[4][5]
Revealed by Sachs
In 2024, Professor Jeffrey Sachs spoke at length about Operation Timber Sycamore on MSNBC's Morning Joe show.[6]
