Adrian Fortescue was a panelist for the discussion about Have Civil Liberties Been Unnecessarily Eroded? at the 2002 Bilderberg.[1]

Background

Adrian Fortescue "spent the first few years of his life in a Japanese internment camp. Returning to England after the war, he was educated at Uppingham, an exclusive independent school in Leicestershire, before going on to earn a classics degree at Cambridge University."[2] He was a son-in-law of Winston Churchill.[2]

Career

In 1964 Adrian Fortescue started his career as a UK diplomat. "But he seemed to find greater fulfilment when he transferred, via a tour of duty in the late 1980s as chef de cabinet to a British European Commissioner, Lord Cockfield, to the permanent service of the European Commission. This culminated, after he had left Lord Cockfield’s office, in four years as the Commission’s Director-General for Justice and Home Affairs."[3]

Fortescue was a Director General of Justice and Internal Affairs of the European Commission.
