The Harvard of Washington’s private schools
Described as "the Harvard of Washington’s private schools,"[1] the school has educated children of notable politicians, including those of several presidents. President Theodore Roosevelt's son Archibald, President Richard Nixon's daughters Tricia and Julie, President Bill Clinton's daughter Chelsea Clinton, President Barack Obama's daughters Sasha and Malia, the grandchildren of President Joe Biden when he was Vice President,[2] and Vice President Al Gore's son, Albert Gore III, graduated from Sidwell Friends. Sidwell accepts only 7 percent of its applicants.[3]

Peggy Hamburg, whose kids attended the school, was on the board of trustees from 2004-2009. She became a member of the Medical Advisory Team.[4]
Sexual abuse
The school requires parents to sign a student-enrollment contract that includes an agreement that any disputes between the student or family and Sidwell will be handled by a neutral arbitrator. Moreover, the contract says, "Any material filed with the arbitrator, the contents of all depositions or testimony, all documents produced during the course of the arbitration, and any remedy imposed or damages awarded by the arbitrator shall remain confidential."[5]
James Huntington
The school chose to pursue a case against Sidwell psychologist and sex ed teacher James Huntington, who was the target of a 2013 lawsuit for his affair with the parent of a student he was counseling.[5] The case exposed teachers that had made advances towards students.[6]
Judge Michael Rankin was the fourth judge assigned to the case. The first three all had to recuse themselves because of ties to Sidwell. The first judge assigned in May 2011, J. Ramsey Johnson, had a son set to graduate from Sidwell that spring, and both he and his wife have donated to the school; the case then went to Craig Iscoe, who also quickly recused himself—his son had graduated from Sidwell in 2006. The case then fell to Gregory E. Jackson, who had graduated from Sidwell in 1969. Only after Jackson recused himself did Rankin—who grew up in Mississippi and whose children don’t attend Sidwell—finally hear the case.[7]
