French multinational advertising and public relations company |
Publicis Groupe is a French multinational advertising and public relations company, and is the oldest and one of the largest marketing and communications companies in the world, by revenue. It is one of the "Big Four" agency companies, alongside WPP, Interpublic and Omnicom.
Its subsidiaries include Leo Burnett Worldwide and Saatchi & Saatchi. The group has operations in over 202 cities in 105 countries, including a strategic alliance with Japanese Dentsu.
Through its financing of Newsguard it is able to censor social media, meaning it has an ability to "bury undesirable views that might hurt its clientele.”[1]
Operations
The company owns several full-service advertising groups that undertake a range of media activities: mobile and interactive online communication, television, magazines & newspapers, cinema and radio, outdoor billboards. The company's services include direct marketing/customer relationship management services, sales promotion, healthcare communications, multicultural and ethnic communications, corporate and financial communications, human resource infrastructure, public relations, design services, interactive communications, events marketing and management, sports marketing, and production and pre-press services.[2]
It was founded in 1926 by Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet, and his daughter Elisabeth Badinter is still part of the management.
Its position has been somewhat eroded by Google and Facebook the last decade.
Qorvis, a U.S. subsidiary of Publicis, has represented the country of Saudi Arabia since the September 11 attacks.[3]
Big Pharma
The company's health division names “40 clients in the life sciences industry,” as customers, including “being a preferred partner with 13 of the top 20 global pharmaceutical companies.”[4] These clients include Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Merck, Bayer, Abbot, Allergan, Biogen, Eli Lilly, Genentech, Gilead, Sanofi and Purdue Pharma.[5]
In May 2021, the Massachusetts attorney general’s office filed a lawsuit[6] against Publicis Health, accusing it of helping Purdue Pharma develop[7] deceptive marketing materials and advertising campaigns, used to mislead doctors into prescribing OxyContin, a widely-abused opioid. According to the lawsuit[8]:
- “From 2010 until 2019, Publicis worked with opioid companies, particularly Purdue Pharma, to increase sales of dangerous opioids like OxyContin, including in Massachusetts, in ways that increased the risk to patients and the public of opioid use disorder, overdose, and death.
- “Publicis devised and deployed unfair and deceptive marketing campaigns designed to push doctors to prescribe opioids to more patients, in higher doses, and for longer periods of time.”
Newsguard
