At the time of his assassination, he was manager of the Treuhandanstalt, responsible for privatizing East Germany's public assets, including 8,500 state-owned enterprises, 2.4 million hectares of agricultural land and forests, and many other things. The West German far-left militant group Red Army Faction (RAF) has claimed responsibility for this act, as part of the RAF's mysterious 'third wave' of assassinations in the late 1980s. An inspection of the scene found three cartridge cases, a plastic chair, a towel, and a letter claiming responsibility from a Red Army Faction commando named Ulrich Wessel, a minor Red Army Faction figure who had died in 1975. The shooter has never been identified.

Policy
Rohwedder was opposed to an unrestricted sell-off of GDR's public-owned factories, may have occasionally favoured a worker-owned solution.[citation needed] His successor, Birgit Breuel, was more in favour of a speedy sell-off to investors.
