Detlev Karsten Rohwedder was a German businessman and politician. At the time of his assassination, he was manager of the Treuhandanstalt, responsible for privatizing East Germany's public assets, including 8,500 state-owned enterprises, 2.4 million hectares of agricultural land and forests, and many other things. The West German far-left militant group Red Army Faction (RAF) has claimed responsibility for this act, as part of the RAF's mysterious 'third wave' of assassinations in the late 1980s. The shooter has never been identified[1] , and there is speculation of this being a false flag operation.

Assassination

On Monday, April 1, 1991, at 23:30, Rohwedder was shot and killed through a window on the first floor of his house in the suburb of Düsseldorf-Niederkassel (Kaiser-Friedrich-Ring 71) by the first of three rifle shots. The second shot wounded his wife Hergard; the third hit a bookcase.

The shots were fired from 63m away from a rifle with 7.62×51mm calibre, a standard used by NATO. An inspection of the scene found three cartridge cases, a plastic chair, a towel, and a letter claiming responsibility from a Red Army Faction commando named Ulrich Wessel, a minor Red Army Faction figure who had died in 1975. The shooter has never been identified.

In 2001, a DNA analysis found that hair strands from the crime scene belonged to RAF member Wolfgang Grams. The Attorney General of Germany did not consider this evidence sufficient to name Grams as a suspect of the assassination.

Policy

Rohwedder was opposed to an unrestricted sell-off of GDR's public-owned factories, may have occasionally favoured a worker-owned solution.[citation needed] His successor, Birgit Breuel, was more in favour of a speedy sell-off to investors.
