Ole Petter Ottersen [1]) is a Norwegian physician and neuroscientist. He took office as the rector of Karolinska Institute in Sweden, which hands out the Nobel Prize for Medicine, in August 2017. He held that job until 2023.[2] Ottersen has been professor of medicine at the University of Oslo since 1992 and was the university's rector from 2009 to 2017.
Education
Ottersen received his doctorate in medicine in 1982 from the University of Oslo.[3]
Career

He has published over 300 papers on cell biology and Neuroanatomy, with an emphasis on signal transduction and synaptic transmission.[3]
He was director of the Department of Anatomy from 1997 to 1999, vice dean for research at the Faculty of Medicine from 2000 to 2002 and was head of the Centre for Molecular Biology and neuroscience from 2002 to 2009.[3]
In 2009 he was elected rector of the University of Oslo for the period 2009 to 2013. He was re-elected for the term 2013-2017.[3]
In 2017, he was appointed rector of Karolinska Institute, [3] a position he held until 2023.
Covid
Ole Petter Ottersen presented at the July 2020 International Symposium On Novel Ideas In Science And Ethics Of Vaccines Against Covid-19 Pandemic,[4] published research on Addressing production gaps for vaccines in African countries
During his time at Karolinska Institute, he oversaw the creation of the Centre for Health Crises, "which has been established to prepare all of society for the next pandemic. Almost 200,000 people have taken the online course that the university developed. And researchers at Karolinska Institute have co-authored over 1,400 scientific papers on COVID-19, many alongside colleagues from partnering hospitals in the region."[5]
In 2021 he mused how:
