Ole Petter Ottersen [1]) is a Norwegian physician and neuroscientist. He took office as the rector of Karolinska Institute in Sweden, which hands out the Nobel Prize for Medicine, in August 2017. He held that job until 2023.[2] Ottersen has been professor of medicine at the University of Oslo since 1992 and was the university's rector from 2009 to 2017.

Ottersen received his doctorate in medicine in 1982 from the University of Oslo.[3]

Career

Heand started working there the same year.[3]

He has published over 300 papers on cell biology and Neuroanatomy, with an emphasis on signal transduction and synaptic transmission.[3]

He was director of the Department of Anatomy from 1997 to 1999, vice dean for research at the Faculty of Medicine from 2000 to 2002 and was head of the Centre for Molecular Biology and neuroscience from 2002 to 2009.[3]

Covid

Ole Petter Ottersen presented at the July 2020 International Symposium On Novel Ideas In Science And Ethics Of Vaccines Against Covid-19 Pandemic,[4] published research on Addressing production gaps for vaccines in African countries

During his time at Karolinska Institute, he oversaw the creation of the Centre for Health Crises, "which has been established to prepare all of society for the next pandemic. Almost 200,000 people have taken the online course that the university developed. And researchers at Karolinska Institute have co-authored over 1,400 scientific papers on COVID-19, many alongside colleagues from partnering hospitals in the region."[5]

In 2021 he mused how:

when the next pandemic hits, the pathogen must not be allowed to get the same head start that SARS-CoV-2 got about a year ago. It is a question of identifying and characterizing zoonotic viruses with pandemic potential (and generating vaccines against them), it is about building capacity for medicine and vaccine production on all continents and in the global south, it is about delineating a governance system for just distribution of medicines, vaccines and healthcare resources on the global level, and it is about improved access to large-scale patient information combined with improved surveillance and data sharing between nations.[6]
