The apartheid era South African chemical and biological weapons (CBW) program had the code name Project Coast. The program was headed by Wouter Basson, a cardiologist who was the personal physician of the then South African Prime Minister P. W. Botha.

Limited Hangout

The existence of the program was proven in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in the 1990s. Noticeably absent from the revelations was the collaboration with foreign powers (United States, Britain, Israel and maybe others) in the development of the products. Also missing was a deeper look into the the likely genocidal intent, and how extensive and successful the deployment of these weapons actually were.

Ethnic bioweapons

Dr Daan Goosen, head of a South African chemical and biological warfare plant, quoted in a 1998 Sunday Times article, said his team was ordered in the 1980s to develop a "pigmentation weapon" to target only black people. He said the team discussed spreading a disease in beer, maize or even vaccinations but never managed to develop one.[1]
