Apartheid was a system of institutionalised racial segregation between blacks, coloureds and whites that existed in South Africa and Namibiafrom 1948 until the early 1990s. The Israeli government's institutionalised discrimination between Jews and Arabs in Israel and the occupied territories in Palestine has also been described as Apartheid.
In May 2021, US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez labelled Israel “an apartheid state” after a week of Israeli military attacks on Gaza and claimed, therefore, it cannot be a democracy.[1]
