Official narrative

At the time the official narrative pinned the blame on "lone nut", James Earl Ray, who originally plead guilty to forego a jury trial but later made many unsuccessful attempts to withdraw his confession and be tried by a jury.

1999 Civil Case

In 1999 the King family and William Pepper brought a civil case and the jury ruled that Loyd Jowers and others, including unspecified [US] "governmental agencies", were part of a conspiracy to kill Martin Luther King Jr. This official narrative (a "conspiracy theory") was quickly attacked by the commercially-controlled media. Wikipedia refers to it as "discredited", although it has never been challenged in a court of law.

Deep State involvement

Mark Gorton suggests in Document:Fifty Years of the Deep State that Martin Luther King was assassinated by the same cabal who were responsible for the 1963 JFK Assassination. He specifically names J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI, military intelligence, and elements of the Memphis Police Department. New Orleans mafia kingpin Carlos Marcello, who played a meaningful role in JFK’s assassination, also played a significant role in the Martin Luther King’s killing. In the case of Dr. King’s assassination, James Earl Ray was merely a patsy who was set up to take the blame - he had no involvement in the shooting.
