Early Years and Education

Gönenç Gürkaynak was born in Ankara in 1976. His father is academician Mehmet Rüştü Gürkaynak. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Ankara University Faculty of Law, he started practicing law in 1998 and completed his master's degree at Harvard Law School, working as a research assistant.

Career

He was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales in 2004 and has lectured at various universities.[2]

He was Twitter's lawyer in Turkey regarding Twitter's appointment of a representative to Turkey.[3] He was one of the representatives of Google within the scope of the investigation opened by the Competition Authority on the grounds that Google abused its dominance in the search market.[4]

He was the lawyer of the Wikimedia Foundation in the case filed with the European Court of Human Rights to remove the block on access to Wikipedia from Turkey.[5]

Gürkaynak is a member of TUSIAD.[6]

Dilek Güngör, a writer for Sabah Newspaper, exposed that both Gürkaynak and his wife have become a different citizenship through the "Citizenship by Investment" program. Gürkaynak, on the other hand, said that he has already held Maltese citizenship for 1.5 years and is satisfied with the facilities provided by the Maltese passport. He was one of the 10 highest taxpayers in Turkey in 2017.[7][8], ninth in 2018[9] and 2019[10].

Gürkaynak works as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law of Bilkent University. His brother Refet Gürkaynak also teaches at the same university in the department of economics and administrative sciences.[11]
