Bytes Media

Roy Schestowitz co-founded Bytes Media

In October 2010, Roy Schestowitz co-founded Bytes Media which delivers stories and analysis about issues where law and technology interact, with partial focus on UK law but also law overseas, for example copyright and patent law in the United States. The main focus, however, is free/libre software. Bytes Media was established as means of unifying the work of various individuals who had collaborated in textual form, shared research, and also produced multimedia coverage in the form of audio and video. Participants of Bytes Media are mostly based in the UK, but readership is international and audience comes mostly from English-speaking countries. Richard Stallman is a regular guest in the video/audio episodes.

Bytes Media reaches millions of people annually and currently operates the following sites:

FOSS Force interview

In June 2016, Roy Schestowitz was interviewed by Robin "Roblimo" Miller of FOSS Force News, who provided the following summary:

"Roy Schestowitz (actually, Dr Roy) has been a strong Linux and free software booster for over a decade. He’s also been one of the world’s louder anti-software-patent activists. Techrights is his primary platform, but his byline has appeared on many other sites, too. Not everyone loves him. He has strong views and doesn’t mince words any more than a certain US Republican presidential candidate. One group that especially dislikes him is the European Patent Office management, which doesn’t bother him because he doesn’t like them either.
"And then there’s Richard M. Stallman. Schestowitz says he won’t say a word against RMS, even though there are points on which they have disagreed. Red Hat? I’m not going to say anything here. Toward the end of the interview, he talks about a Red Hat-NSA connection. Should we quake in our sneakers about this? I don’t know. As a popular cable news network likes to say: 'We report. You decide.'”[3]

A Quote by Roy Schestowitz

Document:Huawei HypocrisyRichard M Stallman: Well, it’s perfectly reasonable suspicion to me. I don’t think the US government should use operating systems made in China for the same reason that most governments shouldn’t use operating systems made in the US and in fact we just got proof since Microsoft is now known to be telling the NSA about bugs in Windows before it fixes them.

Roy S Schestowitz: I was just going to bring this up exactly, so I was saying that the NSA recently received notifications about the zero-day holes in advance and [incomprehensible] the NSA and the CIA to just crack PCs abroad for espionage purposes.

Richard Stallman: Now, [incomprehensible] that this proves my point, which is that you have to be nuts if you were some other country and using Windows on your computers. But, you know, given that Windows has a universal back door in it, Microsoft would hardly need to tell the NSA about any bugs, it can tell the NSA about the mal-feature of the universal back door and that would be enough for the NSA to attack any computer running Windows, which unfortunately is a large fraction of them.”
