J. Robert Schaetzel was an American diplomat who was United States Ambassador to the European Union from 1966 to 1972.[1][2]


Schaetzel was born in Holtville, California, and graduated from Pomona College.


He moved to Washington in 1942 to be a budget analyst with the Bureau of Budget. He joined the State Department three years later as special assistant to the secretary for atomic affairs. He later was special assistant to undersecretary of state and deputy assistant secretary for Atlantic affairs.[3]

He was United States Ambassador to the European Union from 1966 to 1972.[3]

He was president of the Jean Monnet Council in Washington and a consultant to the Brookings Institution and the General Accounting Office. He was a fellow of the American Academy for Diplomacy and the National Academy of Public Administration. He was a member of the Cosmos Club and the Council on Foreign Relations.[3]

He died of pneumonia on November 7, 2003, in Bethesda, Maryland at age 86.[3]


Schaetzel wrote Unhinged Alliance: America and the European Community (Policy books of the Council on Foreign Relations).
