Leighton W. McCarthy was a Canadian stockbroker and "no stranger to power".[1] He attended the 1983 Bilderberg meeting.

Background

He was born in New York in 1944 while his grandfather, Leighton McCarthy was Canadian ambassador to the United States. Young McCarthy spent his early days in Washington where his father, John McCarthy, was as an aide to the ambassador. John was striken with infantile paralysis in 1928 and sent to Warm Springs, Georgia, for treatment. There he grew friendly with Franklin D. Roosevelt who later became president of the United States. The friendship blossomed, and the senior McCarthy became a trustee of the Warm Springs Foundation.[1]

Education

Leighton McCarthy was a graduate of the University of Toronto in economics economist, and took a masters degree from the London School of Economics.[1]

Career

McCarthy was vice president of McLean, McCarthy & Co., a stockbroking firm that dealt mainly with big institutions.[1]

In 1979 the Toronto Stock Exchange elected Layton W. McCarthy as chairman, the youngest man ever to head the exchange.[1]

McCarthy was listed in the 1983 Bilderberg report as "President of McCarthy Securities Ltd."[2] [3], also known as Sanwa McCarthy Securities Ltd.[4],a subsidiary of the Japanese Sanwa Bank.[5]

He was Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Ditchley Foundation.[6]
