Karel Verhoeven is a Belgian journalist and editor[1][2]. He became chief editor at De Standaard in 2010. This role "allows him to set the tone at this flagship of journalism in Flanders,"[3] which he used to incite against the "unvaccinated" during Covid. He was chosen to attend the 2024 Bilderberg conference.
Education
Verhoeven studied Germanic philology at Ghent University. In 1991 he studied for a year at the University of Catania and in 1993 he obtained a master's degree in political philosophy and European politics at the University of Hull.
Career
In 1995 he joined the city editorial office of De Gentenaar, where he was police and court reporter. He then became a reporter for Het Nieuwsblad. In 2000 he made the switch to De Standaard.
In 2009, he was appointed editor of the weekend edition. On 1 September 2010 he became editor-in-chief of De Standaard alongside Bart Sturtewagen.[4][5] In 2013, he only became general editor of the newspaper.[6]
Covid
In June 2020, to incite fear de Standaard "got the most intense reactions from our special edition at the end of June, in which we remembered the first 10,000 coronavirus deaths."[7]
For a year now, we've been living by the grace of numbers. We see them in the curve of infections, hospital admissions, deaths and, since the start of 2021, vaccinations. The curve defines what remnants of freedom we retain.[8]
Criticism
According to the Belgian journalist Willy Van Damme "The editors of De Standard do nothing more on certain topics than transcribe British/American propaganda."[9]
