Joseph Aoun is a Lebanese General who was elected President of Lebanon on 9 January 2025. General Aoun has been Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces since 2017.

Craig Murray reporting

Reporting from outside the Lebanese Parliament, Craig Murray said:

"The Parliament has just voted and elected General Joseph Aoun.
"This comes at the end of a remarkable period of transformation in the Middle East: a period in which the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia are plainly the winners.
"Aoun was openly the US man, somebody they were trying to push into the position. The US special envoy Amos Hochstein Israeli Defence Forces veteran has been here the last few days canvassing for Aoun, and canvassing with politicians telling them to vote for Aoun.
"And it's not only the Americans. In there today in a parliamentary meeting there was a special envoy of President Macron, France being the former colonial power. The French were openly promoting General Aoun.
"And so were the Saudis who also had a special envoy in there today, and Mohammed bin Salman has been advocating for Aoun.
"And you'll not be surprised to hear that the new puppet-ruler of neighbouring Syria Al Jolani, himself a puppet of Saudi Arabia, United States, Israel and Turkey was saying he wished to see Aoun installed here.
"So this is transformational. There are now American-sponsored presidents in power in Syria and in Lebanon, and it's transformational for the Middle East.
"The victor in all of this is of course Israel, not only concluding its genocide in Gaza. It is still in occupation of southern Lebanon, and it is now in occupation of large tracts of Syria.
"So bad news for the Palestinians, major advance – quite a triumph really for the Biden administration in its last throes.
"The United States is now in a much more powerful position in the Middle East than it has been for many years."[1]

"Well that was quick.
"After today's installation of the US puppet general as Lebanese President, the Israeli killer drones above our heads have immediately been replaced by American ones.
"I feel no less threatened."[2]

No relation

He is not related to Michel Aoun, his predecessor as both President of Lebanon and Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, although both are members of Lebanon's Maronite minority (under the National Pact, the President and the Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces are always selected from the Maronite community).
