Jón Sigurðsson was an Icelandic politician and central banker who attended the 1993 Bilderberg meeting.
He was brought in as Minister of Industry and Commerce for the Progressive Party in 2006, and was elected party chairman, in the wake of Halldór Ásgrímsson's sudden departure as prime minister and exit from politics after the party's poor municipal elections. He renounced both posts 23. May 2007 after the Progress Party's election defeat in May 2007, where he failed to win a seat in the Althing (Iceland's parliament).
Prior to that, he had been governor of the Central Bank of Iceland from 2003 to 2006.[1]
Early life and career
Jón was born in Kollafjörður, Iceland, to Sigurður Ellert Ólason, a lawyer, and Unnur Kolbeinsdóttir, a teacher. Jón studied at Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík, where he graduated in 1966. From there, he studied Icelandic and history at the University of Iceland. He graduated with a BA degree in those subjects three years later.[2]
In the late eighties, Jón went to California, where he studied educational science at Columbia Pacific University and in 1988 received an MA and 1990 a Ph.d. in the profession. Next, he received an degree in microeconomics from National University in San Diego in 1993.[3]
Later career
Jón took on the job of editor of the newspaper Tíminn in 1978 and worked there until 1981. After that he became principal of Samvinnuskólinn at Bifröst and later he became rector of the school until 1991.[4]
