João de Deus Rogado Salvador Pinheiro is a Portuguese politician for the Social Democratic Party and former Member of the European Parliament[1]. He was selected to attend the 1990 Bilderberg meeting.
Education
João de Deus Pinheiro has a degree in chemical-industrial engineering by the Instituto Superior Técnico (1970) and a doctorate degree in the same field by the University of Birmingham (1976).
Career
He was professor at the University of Lourenço Marques (Mozambique) from 1970 to 1974, and in the University of Minho after the Carnation Revolution and his return to Portugal.
He was Minister for Education 1985–1987, Minister for Foreign Affairs 1987–1992; in that role he was one of the EU negotiators in [Brioni Agreement that ended ten-day war in the Yugoslav secessionist province of Slovenia in 1991.
Deus Pinheiro was elected a member of the European Parliament for one term in 2004.
From 1993 to 1999 he was a member of the EU Commission under the then Commission Presidents Jacques Delors and Jacques Santer. During this time he was European Commissioner for Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Countries, South Africa and the Lomé Convention.
The EU Commission resigned in March 1999 after allegations of nepotism and favoring family members were made against several EU commissioners as well as against Deus Pinheiro himself. Joao de Deus Pinheiro had appointed his brother-in-law to his circle of personal advisers and that his wife has the use of an official car to get to her job in the commission's energy efficiency unit. Pinheiro's spokeswoman said: "Yes, he has appointed his brother-in-law, for reasons of his specialised expertise. His wife also works for the commission. I have no knowledge of any further members of Mr Pinheiro's family being appointed."[2]
João de Deus Pinheiro was elected member of the Assembly of the Republic in the 2009 elections for Braga, but resigned shortly after for health reasons.
Between 2000 and 2005 he was a director of the Portuguese energy holding GALP Energia.[3]
After leaving the European Parliament, he has been member of the board of several companies.
He is also known as a writer and amateur golfer.
