Henrique Capriles Radonski is a Venezuelan politician and part of one of Venezuela's wealthiest families[1], who was the 36th Governor of Miranda from 2008–2017. Selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2012, Capriles was a candidate at the 2012 and 2013 presidential elections. He and his party, supported by the National Endowment for Democracy, also participated in the 2002 coup attempt.

Early life

Henrique Capriles Radonski was born in Caracas on 11 July 1972. His parents are Henrique Capriles García, a successful businessman,[2] and Mónica Cristina Radonski-Bochenek.[2] His maternal grandparents, Andrés Radonski and Lili Bochenek, were Ashkenazi Jews who emigrated to Venezuela in 1947 from Poland following World War II. In the 1950s, Henrique Capriles García helped launch Kraft Foods' entry into Venezuela by inviting the vice-president of its Nabisco subsidiary and persuading him to invest in the country.[3] Andrés Radonski was an engineer active in the cinema business in Poland; he opened his first cinema several years later, in the eastern city of Puerto La Cruz.[4]

The company operated under the name Circuito Radonski. It was merged in 1998 alongside Venefilms and Grupo Blanco to create the country's largest cinema chain, Cinex.[5] He is also the descendant of relatives who operated the media conglomerate, Cadena Capriles.[6][7][8]

2002 coup d’etat

A part of the old oligarchy who took government as a birth right, he worked as a tax lawyer for Venezuela’s revenue service before co-founding the Primero Justicia (Justice First) party along with Leopoldo Lopez in the year 2000.[9] In the lead-up to the 2002 coup d’etat against President Hugo Chávez, which killed dozens, the party indirectly received hundreds of thousands of dollars and training a CIA cutout, the National Endowment for Democracy. Two of Primero Justicia’s other top leaders, López and Leopoldo Martinez, went on to play key roles in the 2002 coup government of Venezuelan business magnate Pedro Carmona.[10][11][12] During the coup which ousted Hugo Chavez from power two days, Capriles was mayor of Baruta.[13] During the event, Capriles was part of a crowd in Baruta that attacked the Cuban embassy, cutting off water and electricity, destroying vehicles parked outside and refusing to allow the Cuban ambassador to leave.[14]

Presidential candidate

Capriles was selected in primaries held in February 2012 as the opposition candidate against Hugo Chávez. Despite a massive press campaign in national and international media, he did not succeed.[15]

Capriles faced interim president Nicolás Maduro in a presidential election on 14 April 2013, after Chavez' died from a mystery fast-spreading cancer. Voters gave Maduro a narrow victory over Capriles.

Leopoldo López and Henrique Capriles were barred from running at the 2018 presidential election. Capriles rejected the results of the election, claiming election irregularities and calling for a full audit of the election results. Maduro said he would accept an audit of the election results; the election board did not agree to opposition demands for a total recount.[16]

Later

By 2021, he was one of the front candidates to replace Juan Guaidó as the face of the opposition, leading several rallies.[17]
