Andrew L. Stern is the President Emeritus of Service Employees International Union (SEIU)[1] which became one of the largest and most politically involved political action committees in the United States during his tenure as President from 1996 to 2010. [2] His 2016 book, Raising the Floor, explained why universal basic income is the way to "invent a better future,"[3] and is probably why he was invited to the 2017 Bilderberg meeting
Career
Stern belonged as a student in the early 1970s to the left-wing organization Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), and entered SEIU in 1973. after graduatio. In time, he became president of the SEIU branch for the state of Pennsylvania, and in 1980 became a member of the executive committee. In 1984 he was entrusted with organizational activities. After coming to the leadership of the Union, under his leadership SEIU exited the AFL-CIO umbrella Federation and became one of the few American unions to record steady membership growth.[4]
As such, the SEIU has also gained significant political influence over time as an organization that can bring in large numbers of votes and financial donations for Democratic Party candidates. stern has stood out as an important ally of Barack Obama in the presidential campaign and helped his election quite a bit. Under Stern's leadership, SEIU urged Obama and the Democratic majority in Congress to pass a new Labor Relations Bill that would substantially strengthen unions' bargaining position with employers, as well as push for "Obamacare" a mandatory health care coverage for all Americans.[5]
Activities
He was considered one of the most influential labor bosses in the United States and he has been cited as a supporter of universal basic income. More recently, Stern has been characterized as "using his resume in organized labor to support a group that explicitly aims to undermine teacher’s unions—at a time when teacher’s unions have done more to revive militancy in organized labor than any other group." [6]
Stern has been a key figure in financing the online grassroots "netroots" community, along with Dean, George Soros, Simon Rosenberg, and Andrew S. Rappaport, to funnel a progressive agenda to liberal bloggers.[7]
