Omar Mateen was a 29-year-old American citizen of Afghan descent who killed at least 50 people and wounded 53 others in Orlando's Pulse nightclub and gay bar on 12 June 2016.[1]
Prior to the shooting, Mateen was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) twice in 2013 and 2014 for suspected ties to Islamic State. According to unnamed law enforcement sources, Mateen called 9-1-1 before committing the shooting, and pledged his allegiance to IS.[2]
