John Rhodes Horam, Baron Horam is a UK politician. Originally on the right-wing of Labour, he moved to the spooky SDP on its foundation in 1981, after attending Bilderberg/1975. In 1987 he ended up with the Conservative Party.
Education
John Horam studied history and economics at St Catharine's College at the University of Cambridge.[1]
Career
After working for the confectionery manufacturer for two years, he joined Rowntree's in 1962 as a journalist, first at the Financial Times and then as an economist. In 1968 became manager at the CRU Group.
In 1970, Horam was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for the Gateshead West constituency for the Labour Party. In1981, he switched from the Labour Party to its right-wing split-off the SDP. He failed to win in the Newcastle upon Tyne Central constituency at the 1983 general election and resigned from the House of Commons. He then returned to the CRU group.
He joined the Conservatives in 1987, and in the 1992 general election was elected MP in the constituency of Orpington. John Horram also won the constituency in the following three elections, but chose not to stand again for the 2010 general election.
Horam's political career is remarkable because he sat in the House of Commons for three different parties, first running the Ministry of Transport for the Labour Party from 1976 to 1979, and then the cabinet office and the Ministry of Health for the Conservative Party. In addition, he was the economic policy spokesman for the SDP in the House of Commons and a member of the Environment Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee for the Conservative Party.[2]
In 2003 he was one of a handful of Conservative MPs who voted against Britain’s participation in the invasion of Iraq.[3]
On 4 September 2013, John Horam, as Baron Horam, of Grimsargh in the county of Lancashire, became a Life peer Member of the House of Lords.
In 2021 Lord Horam helped in setting up, with John Hayes, MP for South Holland the Deepings, the Common Sense Group of Conservative Parilamentarians. This is now a substantial group in Parliament with a strong core of new "Red Wall" MPs. It campaigns for a robust approach to immigration, law and order and "wokery" and supports the Levelling Up agenda.[4]
