Heinrich Treichl was an Austrian banker. He led Creditanstalt's international drive when it was Austria's biggest bank in the 1970s.[1] He attended four Bilderberg meetings from 1977 until 1980.

Background

.His parents were Alfred Treichl (1879-1945) and Dorothea Treichl (1891-1976), nee Baronesse von Ferstel, granddaughter of the architect of the Viennese Votive Church, Heinrich von Ferstel.[2]

He attended the Schottengymnasium in Vienna[3], graduated from the Lessing Gymnasium in Frankfurt[4], and studies law at the University of Vienna.

Early career

Treichl was a briefly a currency trader at the headquarters of ParisBas in Paris (1936). In 1937 Treichl joined Merkur-Bank in Vienna. During the Second World War Treichl wasconcripted to he Wehrmacht. He deserted in Paris in 1944 and ended up in American captivity.[5]

World War 2

He lost his brother Wolfgang, a Wehrmacht officer who had joined the British, in the war. As a German officer of the Afrika Korps, Wolgang Treichl had been taken prisoner of war by the British. As an unconditional opponent of the Nazi government, he joined a British special unit fighting behind the German lines. According to the memoirs of Patrick Martin-Smith, he died in an unsuccessful infiltration of four SOE agents in1945.[6][7]

Post war career

After working for Ullstein Publishing House for ten years, he joined the Austrian Industrial and Mining Management Company in 1956. From 1958 Treichl was at Creditanstalt-Bankverein AG, from 1962 as a member of the Management Board and in the period from 1970 to 1981 as General Director. He was a member of the Vienna Association of Academics.[8]

From 1974 to 1999, Treichl was President of the [Austrian Red Cross]]. For special achievements regarding the Red Cross, the Heinrich Treichl Prize has also been awarded since 1993.[9]

Family

Heinrich Treichl was married to Helga Treichl (1920-1995) and was the father of Andreas Treichl, General Director of Erste Bank, and the investor Michael Treichl. Helga Treichl's mother was Hilde Ullstein, the granddaughter of the founder of the publishing house Ullstein, Leopold Ullstein.

One of Heinrich' sons, Michael, died suddenly in 2017.[10] Another, Andreas, attended the 2009 and 2022 Bilderbergs.
