André Maurois (born Émile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog) was a French author. He attended the March 1955 and 1956 Bilderberg meetings.
Background
Maurois comes from a family of assimilated Alsatian Jewish industrialists who after the war of 1870, left Alsace to remain French; the Fraenckel and Herzog families transferred their woolen cloth manufacturing plant with their workers from Bischwiller (Bas-Rhin) to Elbeuf (Seine-Maritime).[1]
Career
He was in both world wars a liaison officer between the British and the French military commands.[2]
Maurois enjoyed a world-wide reputation as one of France's leading writers and as a master of the spectacularly successful genre known as the "new biography." His circle of personal friends in France included the most distinguished literary figures of the age.[2]
André Maurois was not only one of the most highly respected writers of his time, he was also one of the most widely read, in Britain and America as well as in France. Almost everything he wrote was immediately translated into English and published in one edition after another.[2]
As he notes in his Memoirs, "Circumstances, my books and my friendships have made me the advocate and incarnation of a close entente between France, England and the United States."[2]
He published a history of the United States in 1946. He also published three short biographies of famous Americans, all of them in English for American children. George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, and one of General Eisenhower.[3]
From 1955 to 1967, he chaired the France-United States Association. He is also a member of the France-Palestine Association, which has become the organization France-Israël.[4]
