Henrik W:son Beer was Secretary General of the Swedish Red Cross, before becoming Secretary General of the International Red Cross in 1959.[1] His national affiliation is listed as "international" in the 1963 Bilderberg programme.[2]
Background
Beer was born in 1915 in Stockholm. he grew up in Visby on Gotland[3]. He studied history, political science and economics.
His brother was editor-in-chief Allan Beer. He was the cousin of the author Gunhild "Puck" Beer, cousin of the painter Dick Beer, and nephew of the painters John and Adolf Beer.
Career
During World War II, he was responsible for coordinating Sweden's aid work for war victims.
He was general secretary at the Swedish Red Cross 1947-1960. Beer was responsible for the organization of the 17th International Red Cross Conference in Stockholm in 1948. Eight years later he was stationed in Vienna where he worked with the 1956 Hungarian Revolt.[4]
On September 30, 1959, he was appointed Secretary-General of the International Red Cross. During his time as Secretary General of the International Red Cross from 1960 until his retirement in 1981[5], membership increased from 86 to 126 countries. Beer was on intimate terms with cooperating agencies such as the WHO, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and other United Nations aid agencies.[6]
As Secretary-General of the International Red Cross, one of his main tasks was to coordinate international aid in connection with natural disasters, and in that capacity he traveled to more than 80 countries. In 1969, it was noticed that Beer had gottenUnicef to assist in an aid work in North Vietnam, in the middle of the Vietnam War.[6]
Beer retired in the early 1981.[7]
