Peter Breggin ended psychosurgery in the United States.

Peter Roger Breggin is an American psychiatrist and critic of shock treatment and psychiatric medication and Covid-19 response. In his books, he advocates replacing psychiatry's use of drugs and electroconvulsive therapy with psychotherapy, education, empathy, love, and broader human services.

Career

In the 1970s Breggin started campaigning against lobotomy and psychosurgery in the western world. Over two decades he worked against what he called a "eugenic federal project at the nation's inner city children". He practiced psychiatry in Washington, DC and Bethesda, Maryland for nearly thirty-five years.[1][2]

In 1972, he founded the Center for the Study of Psychiatry, which was known as the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology until 2011, when it was renamed the International Society for Ethical Psychology and Psychiatry.[3] In 1979 "Electroshock: Its Brain-Disabling Effects" was published. This was the first medical book that dealt with a critical analysis of this method of treatment as inhuman.[4]

A Quote by Peter Breggin

PageQuoteDate
Mattias Desmet“We have examined three of the many interviews given by Desmet before his book came out. Each time, he dismisses “conspiracy theories” without elaborating further.
In these three interviews, Desmet does not use psychology to analyze and discredit people who write about conspiracies — that will come out in the book. That makes his book a bait and switch. The back cover of his book has endorsements from several heroes from the freedom movement whom I hold in very high regard, including professionals who have done excellent research and writing about the conspiracies behind COVID-19. I am guessing, and I hope I am right, that my respected colleagues, who are extremely busy, based their endorsements on Desmet’s interviews and his personal contacts with them — and they had no idea what he was going to write in his book about the emotionally disturbed people who make up or believe in “conspiracy theories.” From the number of endorsements from within the freedom movement, Desmet clearly targeted the group.”
