Career
From the year 2000, Suder worked for the management consultancy McKinsey & Company and took over the leadership of company's Berlin office in 2007. She made a career as a consultant to the German and international IT industry and became director at McKinsey in 2010, where she dealt with diversity management, among other things. From 2009 to 2014 she was responsible for McKinsey's activities in the public sector.
Consultancy scandal
Suder was sworn in as an official State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defense on August 1, 2014 with the task of reforming the armaments sector. During the time she worked there, her boss, defense minister Ursula von der Leyen was heavily criticized for massively overspending on consultancy firms without any good defense outcomes, including from McKinsey & Company.
At her own request, she resigned from the position of State Secretary in April 2018. For her farewell, Minister von der Leyen awarded the Bundeswehr Cross of Honor in gold. In August 2018, Suder took over the chairmanship of the newly founded ten-member digital council of the German government.
In 2015 she became a member of the board of trustees of the Hertie School, a Berlin business school.
Bilderberg in official capacity
In 2015, she participated in the 63rd Bilderberg conference in Telfs-Buchen in Austria. Contrary to the previous practice of participants, to state that the conference participation was unofficial and private, the German Federal Ministry of Defense announced that Ursula von der Leyen had attended the conference on business and given a lecture on the European security strategy, so that Katrin Suder thereby also participated in the conference on official business.[1]
