Giampiero Massolo is an Italian diplomat who attended the 2018 Bilderberg.

Background

Massolo graduated in political science (political-international) in 1976 at the University "Pro Deo" of Rome (later called LUISS).

Career

Massolo began his diplomatic career in 1978. From 1980 to 1982 he worked at the Italian Embassy to the Holy See. From 1982 to 1985 he was first secretary at the embassy in Moscow. From 1985 to 1988 he was at the Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels.

After these experiences abroad, he returned to Italy. Since 1990 he has been in the diplomatic office of the President of the Council of Ministers, in 1993 he became an adjunct Diplomatic Councilor. In 1994 he became Head of the Special Secretariat of the President of the Council of Ministers in the first Berlusconi government, and in 1996 Head of the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 2000 to 2004 he was Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and after a brief period as Director General of Political Affairs, also in 2004, he became chief of the Minister of Foreign Affairs until 2006, when he took on the position of General Manager of the staff. In 2006 he was appointed Ambassador of rank and in 2007 he was appointed Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the highest official in the ministerial administrative structure.

It was also an Italian "sherpa" at the G8 Summit in L'Aquila in 2009.

On 11 May 2012 the Interministerial Committee for the Security of the Republic appointed him director of the Department of information for security, replacing Gianni De Gennaro.

On November 22, 2016 he was also elected president of the Institute for International Policy Studies (ISPI) starting from 1 January 2017.

He is a member of the Italian Group of the Trilateral Commission and of the Executive Committee of the Aspen Institute Italia.
