Official Narrative
Wikipedia says the unit took part in the war in Eastern Ukraine and had roughly 300-400 members in 2014. It was named after the Aidar River in the Luhansk region where it was initially deployed.[2][3] In 2014, Amnesty International reported that members of the Aidar Battalion had committed war crimes during the war in Donbas.[4] It was disbanded in 2015 and reconstituted as the 24th Separate Assault Battalion of the Ukrainian Army, before being absorbed into the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade in 2016. As of October 2018 the battalion lost 130 soldiers killed in action.[5]
Concerns
Russian media report that on October 18, 2022, the prosecutor's office of the so-called 'Donetsk People's Republic' reported that it had submitted the case against 18 members of the Aidar unit to court. The prisoners of war were accused of participating in and organising terrorist activities. Kavkaz. Realii has already reported on the first open hearing regarding the soldiers, which was to take place on July 7, 2023, but was postponed to July 25. The lawyer of one of the soldiers, Pavel Kosovan, confirmed that the soldiers were accused of allegedly participating in the activities of a terrorist organisation and the violent seizure of power and change of the constitutional order in the temporarily occupied Donetsk region.[6]
