In August 2020, Ahrenkiel was sent home (with pay) after the Danish Intelligence Supervision Commission had charged him and 3 others with espionage against the supervisory members; and withholding or lying about key and crucial information of other criminal activity, including illegal cooperation between the Forsvarets Efterretningstjeneste and the NSA to bug Danish fibre optic cables.[1]
