Dr. Oswald Aeppli was Crédit Suisse President from 1977 until 1983 He attended the 1980 and 1981 Bilderberg meetings.

Activities

In 1978, Crédit Suisse partnered with First Boston to create Credit Suisse First Boston in Europe and bought a 44 percent stake in First Boston's US operations.

Chiasso affair

In 1977, officials of the bank's branch in Chiasso, near the Italian border, were accused of using a holding company, a Liechtenstein company called Texan Finanzanstalt, to channel about $850 million in so‐called flight capital from Italy over a period of more than 10 years. The arrangement resulted in the bank suffering losses estimated at hundreds of million of dollars.

"Oswald Aeppli, board chairman of the bank, said the bank's total loss from the Chiasso affair would not be known until Texon's interests in such ventures as an Italian wine concern and a millionaires' island retreat near Venice have been sold. “To carry out these sales in undue haste would not be in the interest of stockholders," he added.

He was "cleared by his fellow directors of any blame in the case."
