Kent began his career as an advertising manager at tobacco manufacturer John Player & Sons Ltd in 1958. Six years later he took a position of a marketing director at Imperial Manufacturing Group Inc., also a tobacco company. In 1969, Kent was appointed an assistant managing director at the same company. Also he served as a chairman and managing director at Imperial Manufacturing Group Inc. from 1975 to 1978. In 1975, Kent became a director at that company, where he worked until 1986.
