UK FOIA Act Exemption
Channel 4 (like the BBC and S4C) need not respond to FOIA requests about information which is "held for purposes other than those of journalism, art or literature".[1]
Commercial activity
In 2018, Channel 4 signed a "seven figure deal" with the company The Meatless Farm Co, a vegan specialist provider of meatless mince and burgers. The broadcaster received a part ownership of the British company in exchange for commercial airtime across its "valuable channel portfolio".[2]
Vinay Solanki, Head of Commercial Growth Fund at Channel 4, said "we hope that through advertising across our channel portfolio and reaching our valuable core 16-34 audience, we’ll help support their impact and growth journey."[3] The channel at once starting broadcasting documentaries attacking the meat industry, while stating it "maintains clear separation between its editorial decisions and commercial activity. There is no conflict of interest."[4]
