In February 2016, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 owned by Western Global Airlines made an emergency landing at the Zimbabwean capital Harare.[1] Authorities became suspicious after noticing that blood dripping from the plane. The Zimbabwe Herald reported that "the ground crew refueling the plane alerted local authorities." The crew claimed that this was because the plane had struck a bird, but it turned out to be coming from the severed arm of a dead man.[2] The plane was carrying 67 tonnes of South African cash. The plane was impounded[3] but later released, together with the crew.[4][5]
Normalized Corruption
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the government of the country set up a "Zimbabwe Anti-corruption Commission". At first it had no police powers or jurisdiction. When it did, it, according to local media, every corrupt politician would face the same fate: "Said official is eventually arrested and may or may not even spend a night or few in jail. The case gains prominence in the media with fellow officials promising zero tolerance. Then the case falters and dies down. The official might even be reappointed to another high level government position. The exercises has been cynically called catch and release by the wider public.".[6][7]
Trump Sanctions
Zimbabwe warned President Donald Trump to "respect the will of the people of United States" or "face sanctions" in the 2016 US election. This apparently a reaction to 2000, when Zimbabwe was slapped with sanctions by several USA foreign secretaries following violence during their 2000 elections. [8]
