Astrup was chairman of a number of Norwegian companies, including the shipping company (oil tankers) Fearnley & Eger A/S (1977–1991), Orkla-Borregaard (1972–1991) and the silicone producer Elkem (1986–1987). In 1988-1989 he was president of the influential Norwegian Shipowners' Association (a core element of Norwegian deep state and the ties to the United States and Britain)[clarification needed]. Fearnley & Eger A/S declared bankruptcy in 1991.
