Jon Hedley Trickett (born 2 July 1950) is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hemsworth in West Yorkshire since a 1996 by-election.
Jon Trickett served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Prime Minister Gordon Brown from 2008 to 2010 and was promoted to the Shadow Cabinet by Ed Miliband in 2011 as Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office.
Trickett was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government under new Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn in September 2015, before serving as Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills from July to October 2016. He was later appointed Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office by Corbyn in February 2017, alongside his portfolio as Shadow Lord President of the Council.
Leaked Labour report
In April 2020, reacting to the leaking of the report "The work of the Labour Party’s Governance and Legal Unit in relation to antisemitism, 2014-2019",[1] Jon Trickett, who was Corbyn’s election coordinator in 2017, told The Guardian:
“There are comments in there which it is hard to avoid the conclusion were racist and sexist.
“There are serious questions that are going to have to be answered. We have to have an explanation.”[2]
Four-point action plan
Trickett (and Ian Lavery) also wrote an article entitled "The Leaked Labour Report Is Shameful – It’s Time for an Urgent Investigation" in Tribune magazine calling for a 4-point action plan:
"First, the report needs to be published officially by the Labour Party. It will almost certainly be requested by the EHRC, so the party should also get out in front and submit it.
"Second, we need an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to discuss its contents.
"Third, that meeting must establish a transparent process to investigate the conduct alleged in the leaked document, with the terms of reference set by the NEC officers.
"Fourth, this process must produce a report, available to the public and not tucked away in a drawer, which restores faith among Labour members in the practices of our party. This report must be presented to both the NEC and to party conference itself."[3]
What is justice?
On 23 March 2021, Jon Trickett tweeted:
What is justice?
- Shrewsbury 24 have had to wait 49 years.
- Hillsborough, 33 years, still waiting.
- Orgreave, 37 years, still waiting.
- Grenfell, 4 years, still waiting.
Justice delayed is justice denied.[4]
