Criminalizing criticism
In July 2021, Dr. Peter Hotez, a member of the commission and professor of pediatrics and molecular virology at Baylor College of Medicine, and frequent commentator on CNN and MSNBC , called "steps to protect our scientists and take swift and positive action to counter the growing wave of far-right antiscience aggression".[2]
"We should look at expanded protection mechanisms for scientists currently targeted by far-right extremism in the United States. Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY) has introduced a bill known as the Scientific Integrity Act of 2021 (H.R. 849) to protect US Government scientists from political interference, but this needs to be extended for scientists at private research universities and institutes. Still another possibility is to extend federal hate-crime protections."[2]
The protection he has in mind does not seem to extend to the numerous COVID-19/dissident scientists that have been censored, gagged and persecuted for their opinions. With a remarkable projection, Hotez said his critics sought "to concentrate power among a selected few while limiting the reach of opposition group".[2]
