Joe Freebody is the former Secretary of Clacton Constituency Labour Party who acted as election agent for Labour candidate Chris Bird in Clacton's 2016 St Paul's by-election.[1]
Petitioner
In April 2011, Joe Freebody organised a petition against urban sprawl in Clacton which attracted more than a thousand signatories.[2]
Treasurer's Report 2015/2016
At the Clacton CLP Annual General Meeting (AGM) in June 2016, Joe Freebody read out the full Treasurer's Report which made a number of false allegations of fraud and financial irregularities against former Executive Committee (EC) office holders. The alleged incidents had all taken place during the current Chair Sam Atkinson's tenure of the position of Treasurer. In September 2016, an independent report on the false allegations was submitted to Cameron Scott, Regional Director at East of England Labour Party, for investigation. By October it was clear that no action had been taken by Cameron Scott beyond referring the matter back to the EC. Legal action by the defamed officers is under consideration.
Resignation
In the wake of the erroneous Treasurer's Report, Joe Freebody resigned as Secretary in August 2016, the Treasurer, Chris Bird, assuming the role of acting Secretary.
