The gunmen fired multiple shots resulting in at least 1 other visitor dying.[1] This was the first time that a former or current U.S. president or presidential candidate was injured in an attempted assassination since president Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.[2] The FBI called the shooting an assassination attempt against the former President and dispatched a "counterterrorism" unit to take over the investigation.[3][4] Questions remain about witnesses recalling seeing the shooter move up and down a roof minutes before, they notifying the police, but the police ignoring their screams.[5][6]

CNN, ABC, NBC and several international media called the shooting a "shooting incident", even after the FBI opened up an assassination probe into the shooting and the shooter was pictured with military combat clothing and an AR-15.[21] [22][23]
